The Font Thing (PC) ***members.ozemail.com.au/~scef/tft.htmll
Every so often comes along an application which is incredibly useful, and once you start using it you see why. The Font Thing is a freeware program for managing TrueType fonts in Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT 4.0. It enables you to browse installed and uninstalled fonts, view detailed information about each font, print font samples, install or uninstall any number of fonts at once, load (and unload) any number of fonts for temporary use, and a lot more. It's one of my favorite applications out there.
Consider getting some freeware fonts too:

www.dafont.com - great collection in catagories
www.simplythebest.net/fonts - great collection in catagories

Color Tools
Picking colors is one of the troubling things for most designers. Some of the tools out there are actually online, and some have to be downloaded. Sometimes it takes knowing theory... other times you can pick colors from nature. For tools to help you, here are my favorites.
Learn about color theory and pick the right color harmonies from www.wellstyled.com
ColorPic (installer)- Allows you to pick from colors on your screen - www.iconico.com/colorpic/
Or... upload a photo to automatically generate a color palette

But... it doesn't stop there. You can test PHP scripts, install databases, manage databases with PHPMyAdmin, and just about anything else that you expect on a web server.... but you can write it off a CD, or a flash drive. If you need a slimmer server, and only need access to PHP, (not to mySQL), try limboserver instead.

CSS Editors
CSS is the rage... as all web designers know, or at least should know. Creating it however, is not the rage. Major industry standards such as Dreamweaver have CSS authoring tools in them, but these freeware applications might pick up the slack... especially for hand coding web sites that you want to look decent.

Audio Editing Tools
Audacity (MAC/PC/Linux) ***audacity.sourceforge.net
Installer
Audacity is the amazing opensource audio editing tool that is just about as powerful as any professional audio application. It might not have all the bells and whistles, but you can do exactly what you need to do in it... import music or other audio, edit the audio together, apply filters when needed, and save out a finished audio file. Tutorials and documentation is also found for free.
---------
ACID XPress 5(PC) mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/download/freestuff.asp
Installer (online)
Creating looped soundtracks is esy with ACID. It has some shortcomings from it's bigger brother ACID, especially with the ability to only export 20 times, but it is still a blast to work with. You also have to register the product to use it.
---------
Garage Band (MAC) www.apple.com/ilife/garageband
If you are on the MAC side, you may try Garage Band. The newest version is not free though. Garage Band is a loop music tool that has gone a bit beyond... mostly in the style of the loops they use. I played with it once for a while and was very impressed. A great tool! I found a free download for version 1.0.1 at:
mac.softpedia.com/get/Audio/Apple-GarageBand.shtml
---------
Anvil Studio (PC) www.anvilstudio.com
Installer
Another free application... this is a MIDI music creation tool. is a free Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP program designed for people who want to: record music with MIDI and Audio equipment, compose music for MIDI and Audio equipment, Sequence music with MIDI equipment, or play with music using a computer and sound card.
--------
dBpowerAMP (PC) www.dbpoweramp.com
Installer
dBpowerAMP supports practically every audio type created: mp3, mp4, m4a, wma, Ogg Vorbis, AAC, Monkeys Audio, FLAC, the list goes on....fully compatible with Windows 95 / 98 / ME / NT4 / 2000, Windows XP. Split into four components (no need to bloat your computer, install just what is required), all functioning seamlessly together. dBpowerAMP Music Converter is nicknamed the Swiss knife of audio. It can convert from just about any format (codec) to another... check out the list at www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central.htm
---------
Free music
You may also download music from lots of different sites. There is only one that I know of where you can get really top notch royalty-free music for soundtracks for FREE. www.freeplaymusic.com/ Important thing about this site is that they have music available in all sorts of genres, and lengths. You can download a version of the same song from 10secs (for quick commercials) up to ~2mins (as soundtracks). This is a very common thing for professional music.
Other music sites:
www.newgrounds.com/audio/
www.megatune.com... creative commons music.
For looping software, you also need free audio loops:

Video Editing Tools
Windows Movie Maker 2 (PC)www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/moviemaker/default.mspx
Really not too bad of software.... it's very basic, but capable. As an editor, it syncs up with FireWire enabled cameras easily... more easily than when using professional software, often. Windows Movie Maker 2.1 makes home movies amazingly fun. With Movie Maker 2.1, you can create, edit, and share your home movies right on your computer. Build your movie with a few simple drag-and-drops. Delete bad shots and include only the best scenes. Then share your movie via the Web, e-mail, or CD. Using third-party software you can even take movies you've made and turn them into DVDs. You can also save your movie back to the video tape in your camera to play back on a TV or on the camera itself.

AVID Free DV(MAC/PC)www.avid.com/freedv/index.asp
AVID is known for being one of the "big-boys" in the video industry. They have been around since the beginning of digital video on the desktop. At first, being only a MAC product, AVID was extremely successful, and extremely expensive (starting at 30-40k). In recent years, because other products like Premiere, Final Cut Pro, and even Vegas Video have redefined the price/features ratio, AVID has had to find another way to promote their products. So... AVID free DV. Not the most powerful DV editor on the market at all, but works well, and is based upon AVID solid technologies. Tutorials found at: www.avid.com/freedv/tutorials/index.asp

321 Media Player Classic (PC) ***sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli
Have you ever had trouble playing DVD files, mpegs, real media files, QuickTime video, and any other directshow video? Well, this tiny little player does it all... in one file. It's amazing. Most video players take lengthy installs, and could possibly replace codecs in direct show filters on your computer... causing your other video applications to be a little bit more buggy. This one doesn't do that.

WAX (PC/LINUX) www.debugmode.com/wax
Wax is a high performance and flexible video compositing and special effects software. The idea for Wax is to be very general purpose and flexible in video compositing and effects, so that you can compose your dream video sequence with ease everytime. Wax can create 2D & 3D special effects and can work in two modes - as a standalone application which would appeal for home users/beginners, and as a "plug-in" to video editors/NLEs which would be more useful for professional editors. Currently Wax can work as a plug-in with Sony Vegas®, Pure Motion EditStudio and Adobe Premiere® and work for integrating with various other NLEs is in progress.

Also, the documentation is free... although it is always in progress.

Alice 3D (PC/MAC/LINUX)www.alice.org
Installer (online)
A 3D authoring system... Alice address both the mechanical and sociological barriers that currently prevent many students from successfully learning to program a computer. Alice addresses the mechanical barriers to programming by making it much easier for students to create programs. Rather than having to correctly type commands according to obscure rules of syntax, students drag-and-drop words in a direct manipulation interface. This user interface ensures that programs are always well-formed. In addition, Alice reifies object-based programming by providing animated, on-screen 3D virtual objects.

Run it... (open folder)
The Digital Universe is composed of atlases that cover various portions of the universe. Currently, we distribute our Milky Way Atlas and Extragalactic Atlas. In addition, we offer other data products and activities that accompany our main Atlases. Partiview is the interactive visualization software that is used to view the Digital Universe Atlas. Developed by Stuart Levy and the Virtual Director Group at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, Partiview was born in the framework of scientific visualization rather than the planetarium community. For this reason, you may find that this provides great freedom in how you explore your data, but you may notice some limitations of the software as well.
